With Watton receiving the kick off on in this merit league one fixture, a bone hard pitch and fresh wind made conditions less than ideal for both outfits. Wymondham were the more aggressive and determined side catching Watton napping, simple ball through the hands and missed tackling gifted the home side the softest of scores; unconverted for a 5 – 0 lead 10 minutes played.
From the restart again Watton were less than convincing in all facets of play and were duly punished from a better organised team, straightforward handling & poor defence again allowed the home side to run through tackles with ease to double there score line to 10 – 0.
Eventually Watton snapped out of this spell and began to compete, with driving runs from McMullen and Evans drove the home side into there 22. The home side resorting to killing the ball at every opportunity gave Turnbull 3 penalty chances to convert, 1 from 3 gave Wymondham a 10 – 3 half time lead.
Watton began the second half with a bang as an immediate penalty for continual infringements at the ruck saw the home side down to 14 for 10 minutes, a quick tap penalty saw Evans in unstoppable form crash over to score, with Turnbull unable to convert brought the score line to 10 – 8.
Once again Watton took the game to Wymondham and dominated forward play although the home side spoiled ball at every chance preventing any clean ball for Watton backs; the game turned into a scrappy and ill-tempered forward battle with Watton on the ascendance. Watton crossed the line twice only for both attempts to be turned down; held up and grounding not seen, respectively cost Watton dearly. With the home side on a rare excursion into the Watton half; again managed to run through a non-existant defence to score a converted try 17 – 8.
Watton again dominated up to the final whistle with Hynds coming close breaking from no 8 only to be hauled down 2 metres short, told the tale of this game.
