Watton hosting this friendly encounter at Dereham road, with Swaffham receiving the kick were put on the back foot immediately having to clear there lines giving Watton good lineout ball in the 22, with Bayley claiming the line an excellent driving maul powered over allowing number 8 Hynd to touch down, with the conversion pushed wide Watton taking a 5 - 0 lead from 5 minutes of play.
The restart saw Swaffham forwards rally and take the game to Watton, spoiling at every opportunity, turning over possession & driving to within 5 metres of the line, lines cleared from Watton on several occasions only to be pushed back from some very impressive work from the visitors pack. Watton forwards repelled this attack with some dogged defensive play managing to keep the visitors at bay. With a Watton winger receiving a yellow card for a high tackle Swaffham made no mistake using the advantage, spinning the ball wide for a well worked try in the corner. With the conversion pushed wide the scores were tied at 5 all, 25 minutes elapsed.
Watton responded with some excellent 15 man rugby surging into the visitors territory; Lloyd Bryant at 10 releasing centre pairing Walker & Sheryl to run some great angles taking the play to the line, indiscipline from Swaffham gave Lincoln James Evans the touchdown, driving over from the penalty, unconverted bringing the half time score to 10 – 5.
With Watton making a number of changes the game took on a higher tempo, Harris driving through the Swaffham lines offloading to back row partner McMullen making hard yardage, with a solid platform Turnbull pinned the visitors deep in there own half with some inch perfect positional kicking. Both sets of forwards battled hard nullifying each other’s play. The deadlock broken when Turnbull converted a penalty from 20 metres giving Watton an 8 point lead with 10 minutes remaining 13 – 5.
Swaffham battled to the end, again the backs ran in a sublime try with slick handling and pace scoring under the posts, with the conversion being the last kick of the game, proving to be to little to late, giving Watton a well deserved victory 13 points to 12. Again Watton proving to be a class outfit earning a well deserved victory from a much higher ranked opposition.
