Watton hosted Holt in this Merit League One top of the table clash, with Holt receiving the ball from the kick off it was obvious that this game was destine to be a close and hard fought encounter; with both sets of forwards battling hard, Watton took the early advantage taking play steadily into the visitors territory. Watton receiving a penalty for offside was subsequently converted from 20 metres by full back Turnbull giving Watton the early lead 3 - 0 from 10 minutes of play.
Holt pushed into the 22 from the restart recycling ball well, an attempted penalty from Holt being pushed wide. The return kick was driven back from Holt after a number of unsuccessful attacks an attempted drop goal failed to hit the mark enabling Watton to clear to the half way line.
The game turning untidy with errors from both sides, obstruction from Holt No 7 awarded with a yellow card allowed positional kicking from Turnbull to give good line out ball to Watton, catch and drive only to be held from good Holt defence, with Watton having the lions share of possession with more direct and powerful play failed to convert good pressure into points with a myriad of unforced errors enabling the visitors to hold on to half time.
The second half brought more errors from Watton gifting Holt 6 points from 2 penalties on the 22 bringing the score to 3 – 6, 30 minutes remaining.
Watton pushed Holt back into the 22, showing strong attacking from the Watton back row, with Watton commanding at the scrummage Holt resorted to kick away possession at every opportunity; with another attempted clearance from Holt being charged down enabled front row Evans to collect and run in from 30 metres, with the conversion missed brought the score to 8 – 6.
The restart saw more errors from the home side enabling Holt to regain the lead from a well taken penalty 8 – 9.
Watton regained some composure driving deep into the visitors half, awarded with a penalty saw Turnbull put the home side back on top 11 – 9, with 15 minutes remaining.
Watton reduced to 14 as Harris saw yellow for a high tackle the penalty attempt pushed wide from Holt. Watton again conceded penalties in kickable positions although Holt refused to take advantage missing from 2 attempts, giving Watton a narrow win.
