09/09/2007

WATTON 29 FAKENHAM II 0

Bright sunshine and near perfect conditions at Dereham Road saw Watton host this friendly encounter against Fakenham II.
Fakenham receiving the ball from the kick off were put under immediate pressure from the Watton pack, pushing the visitors into the 22 but good forward play allowed lines to be cleared up to half way; again Watton forwards took control looking the better drilled outfit, making good headway into the visitors territory. A solid platform from the home side saw the ball spun wide at every occasion with wingers Lamb & Henson receiving quality ball, the visitors defence proved to be more than a match for these attacks, turning over possession from isolated play.

Penalties for holding on gave Fakenham 2 opportunities to take the lead, both from long distance not making the mark. This spurred Watton on with the forwards being more effective sucking in the defence to release Watton backs, an overlap allowing John Sheryl to touchdown in the corner, converted from Turnbull 7 – 0.Added pressure from the home side forcing errors from the visitors giving strong field position, excellent lineout ball from Bailey saw Everitt take control at the back of the maul for a drive over try from 10 metres the conversion from Turnbull bringing the halftime score to 14 – 0.

The second half begun with a bang as Watton secured ball and slick hands gave Captain Walker the space to touchdown in the corner, unconverted 19 – 0. Watton made a number of changes that altered the tempo of the game, fast and frenetic play with the forwards running in broken play making good yardage although forced passing and lack of any composure let several golden opportunities go begging. Strong scrummage from Watton from 10 metres out allowed Murray at 10 to release Henson for a simple try unconverted 24 – 0.

The last score of the game saw flanker Rob George power through the Fakenham defensive line from 20 metres to score a classy individual try, with the conversion pushed wide from Danny Walker, Watton ran out 29 – 0 victors.
