Watton vs Diss III

19/02/2007
Watton 36 - Diss III 19

Diss came over to Watton on the back of an impressive run of form, but form counts for nothing down at Dereham Road. Straight the kick off Watton were on the frontfoot with Everitt Breaking clean through only to be bought back for a scrum. The home side opened the scoring through stand in fly half Shingfield after breaking through a couple of tackles and outpacing the covering defence, unfortunately the conversion was unsuccessful.. Diss replied with two scores one unconverted. The Watton side dug in and through Harris who beat four defenders to score, this time the kick was good 12 – 12 at halftime.

Watton stepped up a gear with the forwards making inroads through the rapidly tiring Diss pack. After several tap penalties Barre used his power to claim a touchdown from close range, Shingfield kicking the extra points 19 - 12. Next it was the turn of the Watton backs who started to carve up, closely supported by the back row. Skipper Walker grabbed a score in the corner bursting through the Diss back-line, the try was not converted. Several phases of kicking commenced which made the game more like a tennis match than a rugby match. From a poor kick into the Watton 22 the ball was moved to Giles Thurston. Who with pretty much the length of the pitch in front of him set off on a mazy run which took past the first couple of defenders. Still with men to beat he kept going suddenly finding another gear to race past the Diss full back to touchdown in the corner. The angle was too much for the kick, which was missed. 29-12. The Watton pack now fully in control started to batter the now exhausted Diss pack, with Bayley and Oakley at the forefront. It was one such run from Hynd that led to Watton’s final score offloading to Omer who fed the ball to Shingfield who popped the ball to Fullback Ellard at full pace to run under the sticks, the easy kick was good 36-12.

Diss now beaten had one last attack, choosing to bulldoze their way forward but the Watton defence held firm until the Referee left his mark on the game. The home defensive line didn’t look like breaking but a couple of infringements led the referee to award a penalty try to the visitors. Final score 36-19.
