The home of Watton RFC, Dereham road, being the venue of this Merit League One fixture was in perfect condition, bathed in sunshine as the visitors Diss received the kick off. Only the conditions were perfect for the visitors as the Watton machine sprung into action, a no holds barred assault as the Watton pack surged through the visitors defence culminating in a penalty just short of the goal line, this being duly crossed as Tony Oakley made short work of any remaining resistance powering to the line, Turnbull converting for a 7 – 0 lead.
The restart brought the same conclusion as the Watton pack provided a perfect platform to release the backs, inch perfect kicking from Turnbull at 10 gave John Sheryll the perfect ball to hit at pace giving the visitors no opportunity to defend, 12 – 0 unconverted. The rest bite for the visitors was short lived as No 8 George collected the restart ball and powered through several tackles to touch down for a fantastic individual score this being duly converted from Turnbull 19 – 0.
Diss to there credit showed more spirit from the restart defending strongly, resisting the forward onslaught for some ten minutes, unforgiving the Watton pack closed in steadily to the in goal area as Matt Barre broke away only to be held up gave Watton an attacking scrum, as scrum turned into ruck a touch of brilliance from scrum half Omar, with a show & go sniped to the line, with the extra points taken the score read 26 – 0. With half time approaching broken play gave the Watton backs space for Walker to glide through and score, the conversion saw Watton lead 33 – 0, half time.
The second half began as the first ended with all the pressure on the visitors, the backs with ball in hand made a clinical score as Balls on the wing hit a perfect line to dissect the defence for a converted score, 40 – 0. The visitors reacted well as they pushed Watton back to the line, continual infringement at the ruck saw a penalty score awarded, converted 40 – 7.
With 15 minutes remaining a serious leg injury to Watton centre J Sheryll saw the match abandoned, the final score remained 40 points to 7.
