The first game of the season saw Watton travel to Swaffham for a warm up game which was to be played in four 20 minute quarters with unlimited substitutions.
With the first quarter kicking off Swaffham fielded a full strength first team, Watton coped with the forward pressure well although the Swaffham scrummage proved very dominant easily winning the early encounters. With clean ball Swaffham backs had the advantage and good pace saw the centre glide through the Watton defence to run home from deep in there own half for a converted score. 7 – 0.
Solid pressure from Swaffham forwards pushed the visitors into the 22, an attempted clearance from Watton saw the Swaffham backs spread the ball wide to score in the corner unconverted brought the first quarter to an end. 12 – 0.
The second quarter saw Watton building a solid platform although never linking with the backs giving little or no genuine attacking options. Swaffham in good position in the 22 were awarded a penalty, a quick tap saw the line crossed for an unconverted try.
The third quarter saw Watton dominate in the pack gaining hard yards with Everitt & Oakley terrorising the home side, a rolling maul crossed the line although the grounding could not be seen. Cleaner ball for the Watton backs saw some strong running but never looked like crossing the line bringing the quarter to a close.
Swaffham made wholesale changes for the final quarter and with Watton tiring the home side pushed home the advantage running in another 4 scores to close out the game 39 – 0.
A solid performance from Watton at this level giving an overall positive performance for the upcoming season.
